How do I know if my old jewelry is real gold?
Old jewelry can be difficult to identify by appearance alone. Learn what to look for before bringing gold jewelry to AK Gold & Silver for an in-person evaluation.

The short answer
The short answer
Look for markings, consider the item's age and condition, and treat appearance as only an initial clue. The reliable way to determine whether jewelry contains gold is to have it tested and weighed in person, with the evaluation explained while you are present.
Start with the jewelry you already have
The most common items are often the ones left in a drawer: broken chains, single earrings, old rings, unworn bracelets, and pieces inherited from someone else. Separate those items from costume pieces and gather any matching parts or boxes that came with them.
Check the inside of a ring, the back of a pendant, or the clasp of a chain for a purity marking. A marking can be useful, but it does not replace testing. Jewelry can be worn, repaired, altered, or marked in ways that make a visual inspection incomplete.
Why home checks are not enough
Color and weight can provide clues, but neither one proves what a piece contains. Gold jewelry may look different because of its purity, finish, wear, or design, while other materials can look similar at first glance.
Avoid treating a home test or an online estimate as a final answer. The item's metal content, weight, and condition need to be considered together, and a price cannot be determined accurately without seeing and evaluating the item in person.
What waiting tends to cost
Putting off an evaluation does not preserve today's market rate. A later offer is based on the live market rate and the item's condition at that time, so an earlier evaluation cannot be carried forward as a guaranteed future price.
There is also a practical cost to leaving unwanted jewelry stored indefinitely. Pieces can be misplaced, separated from matching parts, or damaged before you decide what to do with them. An in-person appraisal can give you information without requiring you to sell.
What happens during an evaluation
AK Gold & Silver evaluates gold jewelry in Highland Village, TX. Items are tested and weighed in front of you, and the findings are explained before you decide whether to accept an offer.
If you are not ready to sell, you can use a free no-obligation appraisal to understand what you have. If you do choose to sell, AK Gold & Silver provides cash for gold after the evaluation and your approval.
Can I know the value from a photo?
No. A photo may show the design, but it cannot confirm the metal content or weight. AK Gold & Silver evaluates items in person rather than providing sight-unseen pricing.
Should I bring broken gold jewelry for evaluation?
Yes. Broken chains, damaged rings, and other unworn gold jewelry can still be evaluated. Bring all parts you have so the item can be examined and weighed together.
Do I have to sell after an appraisal?
No. The appraisal is free and there is no obligation to sell. You can review the evaluation and decide what you want to do.

Two offers for the same jewelry, bullion, silver set, or watch can differ because buyers may be working from different information, testing methods, and payout terms.
